How To Treat An Allergy-triggered Cough

Tag: Generaladmin @ 12:55 pm

How To Treat An Allergy-triggered Cough

It’s springtime; the trees are budding, the flowers are blooming…and you’re stuck inside, coughing and sneezing and hiding from the substances that trigger your allergic reactions. Having a cough or cold is bad at any times - having cold-type symptoms every year at the same times is even worse. There are various ways to treat an allergy cough and help you get back to enjoying life outdoors.

There are various substances that can cause an allergy-triggered cough. The most obvious one is pollen, which plagues thousands of people across the country. Others include animal dandruff, dust, and mold. Before you run out and buy a cough suppressant so that you can have a rest from coughing, it’s good to remember that coughing is your body’s way of clearing the respiratory tract and lungs. It may not be in the best interest of your health to stop the cough immediately. There are packaged drinks that can be bought at a drug store that contain calming ingredients like honey or chamomile which can help to control your cough without suppressing it altogether.

If you have been suffering from a cough for over a week, and you believe it is allergy-related, it is best to make an appointment with your doctor. The doctor can diagnose what is causing your cough, and can also prescribe what would be the best treatment. He or she can choose from a variety of products that are already available, or can write you a prescription. Your doctor may advise that you take a cough syrup that helps to calm the throat but also allows you to continue coughing to clear your lungs.

Once you have been diagnosed with an allergy, you now have a weapon you can use against the substances that cause your allergic reaction - knowledge. If you know what triggers a reaction, you can avoid it, or, in the case of an allergen like pollen, you can take allergy medication before stepping outside. Especially when you have a cough, one of the best steps you can take is to rest. If you have to work, take a nap when you come home. Give your body not only the medication, but the time it needs to recover and get you feeling healthy again.

Getting The Upper Hand On Asthma Allergy

Tag: Generaladmin @ 12:55 pm

Getting The Upper Hand On Asthma Allergy

Asthma allergy is the number one form of allergy today. And since asthma allergy is inherited, one can get it at a young age. The diagnosis process for asthma allergy is a simple and very straightforward test and will immediately determine if you do have asthma and not just some other type of allergy.

Symptoms of an asthma allergy

An asthma allergy reaction can vary in degree, from mild to severe. The following are symptoms of an asthma allergy:

Headache
Fever
Chronic coughing
Chest pain or tightness
Difficulty in breathing
Rapid breathing or wheezing
Scratchy or sore throat
Itchy, watery eyes
Runny nose
Continuous sneezing
Restlessness

Some of the mentioned symptoms have the same indicators to conditions like pulmonary disease; sinusitis and influenza so make sure you see a doctor for a more precise diagnosis. What you thought as an asthma allergy may actually be something else.

An asthma allergy reaction that is mild to moderate in degree can be identified with tightness of the chest, spewing and coughing up mucus, having difficulty sleeping and constant wheezing.

A severe asthma allergy attack may be characterized by the person having difficulty in speaking, a bluish color to the person’s lips and fingernails, and breathlessness. When this happens, the patient must be ready with their medication.

Asthma Allergy Treatment

The asthma allergy is treated by medicines prescribed by the doctor. These medicines reduce the swelling of the mucous membrane and help normalize the air passage of the person with asthma allergy. Called ‘controller medicines’, they help ease the pain of the asthma allergy attack:

Mast cell stabilizers - non-steroidal medications that control the inflammation by stopping the body from releasing inflammatory chemicals.

Corticosteroids - another anti-inflammatory medication.

Anti-leukotrienes - it stops the production of leukotrienes that are responsible for the increase in inflammation that causes constriction of the airway muscle and close the windpipes of the patient.

The drugs mentioned are used to help patients with asthma allergy to gain control of their asthma and keep on living a normal life. They are available in capsules, tablets and inhalers. A person suffering from asthma attacks should always bring their medicine along especially since these attacks are unpredictable.

Asthma Allergy Prevention

An asthma allergy attack cannot be prevented since doctors are not sure what causes asthma. But there are ways that a person with an asthma allergy can reduce the symptoms or totally avoid having an attack.

Keep a clean and dust-free environment by vacuuming the house.

If you live near a dusty road where cars frequently pass by, pour water on the road in front of your house. This will stop the dust from flying into the home.

Regularly clean the fan, air-conditioning and other ducts that come in contact with air.

Avoid places that have plenty of environmental allergens like molds, pollens, animal dander and secondhand cigarette smoke.

Wear a mask when cleaning the house or going to a place full of allergens.

Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet.

In the end, the only way to defeat asthma is to learn how to live with the condition. Healthy living is a great way to turn one’s life around when a person has asthma. And with the help of modern science, it is not impossible to lead a productive life. Despite an allergic reaction, one should not stop enjoying life even if they have asthma.

Signs Of Having An Allergy In Your Child

Tag: Generaladmin @ 12:55 pm

Signs Of Having An Allergy In Your Child

It can be quite scary when your child first shows signs of having an allergy. It’s difficult to figure out what the irritant is, especially if there is more than one. That is why it’s important to have the allergy in your child diagnosed by a knowledgeable doctor, as then treatment can begin.

An allergy in your child can come from a variety of sources. The most common culprits are food, inhalants, and contact irritants. These three categories are known to cover a variety of symptoms and causes.

Food Allergies

Children and adult allergies follow different patterns. A food allergy in your child is most likely to come from milk, eggs and peanuts. Children will often outgrow these allergies, but in the meantime, children and adults are more likely to react to foods they eat the most often.

A food allergy in your child may be prevented by avoiding high-risk foods. Breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of life has also been shown to be effective in avoiding allergies. If supplementing is necessary, use a hypoallergenic formula. Experts also say to avoid giving dairy products to your child before he is 12 months old, eggs until he’s 2 years old and nuts and fish until he is 3 years old.

Inhalant Allergies

Many things in an indoor environment can cause an allergy in your child. Cats, dogs and dust mites are common culprits, and the allergy to pets actually comes from a reaction to their dander. There are ways to minimize pet dander - brushing and bathing the animal and vacuuming regularly with a HEPA filter can help.

A dust mite allergy in your child can be reduced by covering pillows, mattresses and box springs in special slip covers. This will deprive the dust mites of the dead skins cells they need to survive. Reducing the amount of carpeting in the home can also give dust mites less places to live.

Contact Allergies

An allergy in your child can be caused by contact with insects or irritating substances to the skin. An allergy to a stinging insect can be alarming, and a child with this problem must be educated about his allergy at an early age. A person or child with a stinging insect allergy must carry epinephrine with him at all times. One sting can cause anaphylaxis shock, which can be life-threatening.

Certain substances can be the culprit behind a skin allergy in your child. Many fragrance chemicals are made up of volatile organic compounds, which can be respiratory irritants. Skins reactions to fragrances in laundry detergents can show up as hives, rashes, dermatitis and eczema. The most common causes of skin irritation, or allergic contact dermatitis, are caused by nickel, gold, thimersol, neomycin sulfate, formaldehyde and bacitracin.

There are several more causes of an allergy in your child, but food, inhalant and contact irritants are the most common. While the symptoms might be frightening, most childhood allergies can be managed with proper medical care.

Allergy Related Sinus Problems

Tag: Generaladmin @ 12:55 pm

Allergy Related Sinus Problems

In this brief article I would like to share some ideas on how to combat dreaded sinus problems that relate to allergies. Having to go through the process myself, perhaps I can show some understanding to those who are currently suffering from sinus problems and looking for some type of relief in the ever so dreadful allergy seasons. The hunt has been on for an effective way to combat sinus problems and there have been many products that have gone on the market, both prescription and over the counter drugs.

Many have tried anti-histamines to combat the problems, which can be effective, but also they find themselves with a list of side effects that can make them more miserable then they were with allergies. What anti-histamines do is block a chemical called histamine, (if you didn’t get that from the name) that is produced by the body itself when it is suffering from an allergic reaction. It actually causes redness and swelling in the eyes and nose as small blood cells widen because of the released histamine. Therefore anti-histamines are used, but are the cause of sometimes extreme drowsiness, loss of appetite, dry mouth, and blurred vision. They can even make a person dizzy by using it. Personally I didn’t know which was worse, the side effects or the allergies. Either way I was still miserable, and couldn’t really tell a difference with my allergies before and after I had taken the anti-histamines. Anti-histamines can also be dangerous when a person is currently on other medication.

It wasn’t until my doctor prescribed an expensive prescription nasal spray that I began to lose the allergy symptoms that I once suffered from. It had worked, I was so happy to have lost the allergy problems I was suffering from, but then, yep, you guessed it another side effect which I just couldn’t bear; a headache. Yep, that is right, a headache, and not just a little one, but a pounding one every time I did anything the least bit laborious. So there I was, debating again which was worse, the pounding headache or the annoying allergy symptoms that I couldn’t get rid of. Finally I gave up on the expensive nasal spray.

Then I heard about a different nasal spray, all natural, and to my surprise much less expensive than what I had been using. It all starts with a naturally occurring five carbon sugar called xylitol. Xylitol looks and appears just like sugar. It has basically the same chemical structure except for one tiny difference. That difference is what makes xylitol an effective bacteria killer and cleanser. It has been used safely as a dietary supplement because of its similarity in taste with sugar, but it is used effectively in a nasal spray to cleanse the nasal wall and relieve anyone who is suffering from allergy related sinus problems.

Here is how it works. First we have a saline nasal spray, which has been tested and used for a very long time by many allergy combating companies, but then we combine the cleansing effect of xylitol. Once it is used, sinus problem bacteria found in the nasal wall consume the xylitol. The slight difference in the structure of xylitol and regular sugar make it impossible for bacteria to metabolize it and die because they can not do it because of xylitol’s 5 carbon structure. Therefore your nasal wall is essentially washed and cleansed which combats sinus problems and prevents future allergy related symptoms. We always worry about bacteria on our hands and wash them many times a day, but why not worry about the bacteria found in our nose, which is the culprit of so many allergy symptoms and sinus problems that we suffer from.

Allergy Remedies Defined

Tag: Generaladmin @ 12:55 pm

Allergy Remedies Defined

If you don’t have the sometimes debilitating seasonal allergies, you probably know someone who does suffer from them. Allergies typically show up in spring and fall. It’s especially hard to get out and really appreciate fields of spring flowers or blazing colors in the fall. Burning, itchy, and stinging red eyes and tightly stuffed or irritatingly runny noses are de rigueur. Water accumulates in the head, especially around the ears. Cuddly pets become not so cuddly. Headaches only add to the brutal discomfort.

You may well wonder if there are any allergy remedies sufficient enough that allow you to enjoy the seasons without suffering the symptoms. OTC medications offer only temporary relief of symptoms, but have side effects such as drowsiness, that can’t be afforded as per our daily lifestyle. Here are a few natural allergy remedies that deserve a try.

You first need to understand the overall dynamics of allergies. The pollen, pet dander and mold have a bad habit of inserting itself on the lining of the mucous membranes. One grain of these aggressors will become attached to your mucous membranes, in nasal passages, causing your immune system to extract large amounts of histamines in response. These histamines cause your body to respond to the invasion, producing a number of reactions that cause your body to flush these unwanted invaders. The results of this flushing action are the symptoms of allergies, which are the cause of your intense suffering!

Conventional over the counter anti-histamines destroy the body’s natural defensive efforts to rid your body of the offenders, while subduing the symptoms which caused you to seek out medication in the first place. Aren’t there any natural allergy solutions that allow the body to fight these symptoms?

As a matter of fact, yes there are non drug induced remedies available. Natural allergy remedies aim to prevent symptoms before they occur. Here is just a short list of allergy remedies that are definitely worthy of consideration.

Dietary input figures prominently in the impact of your allergy symptoms. Studies have shown that foods rich in the Omega-3 fatty acids tend to suppress allergic reactions. Cold water fish, naturally raised meats and dairy, flaxseed, and walnuts are an excellent source of this nutrient. Include these foods in your daily diet for a positive effect.

Among the natural allergy remedies, try spicy Dijon mustard, horseradish or hot chili peppers as a nasal decongestant. You’ll experience immediate relief.

In India, the Neti pot is the top choice. A Neti pot is a small vase of salt water which is used like a nasal spray, deactivating the offending intruder, both preventing allergy attacks and relieving nasal congestion.

There are plenty of herbal allergy remedies available. Butterbur, a common weed in Europe, provides an alternative to over the counter anti-histamines. Papaya contains proteins, the same ones that relieve allergy symptoms. Eyebright also relieves nasal congestion, thick mucous and coughs. Hay fever and nasal congestion may be relieved with skunk cabbage root.

For a truly off the wall treatment, try Cubeb, the unripe berry of this native pepper of Sumatra. When crushed and rolled into an herbal “cigarette”, hay fever symptoms will subside.

Factors To Consider When Buying An Allergy Control Product

Tag: Generaladmin @ 12:55 pm

Factors To Consider When Buying An Allergy Control Product

A wide variety of allergy control products are available both online and in stores. The selection can be mind-boggling and confusing. Depending on your type, or types, of allergies, some items can be good purchases while others will be less than effective.

There are several factors to keep in mind when being a smart consumer of allergy control products. Cost, effectiveness and number of items needed are all things that you should consider.

Cost

Unfortunately, a lot of allergy control products are expensive. But you can use the Internet to find items being sold at a discount, but beware of items like HEPA filters, that you might find being sold for much less than you’ve seen elsewhere. Sometimes you do get what you pay for, and quality can be low.

Be sure to use reputable online stores and brick-and-mortar businesses. Ask your doctor where he suggests shopping for things like nonirritating cleaning supplies, dust mite covers and non-allergenic air conditioner and heating filters.

Effectiveness

Stick with items your doctor or allergist suggests. If you try an allergy control product they don’t recommend and it seems to help with your symptoms, great. However, your doctor will know what has been effective for his patients in the past and he won’t want you to waste money.

There are quite a few debates about which allergy control products are effective. HEPA filters are often compared to air ionizers. Some experts say mattress and pillow covers are effective against dust mites, but the special bedding and sheets are not. Be sure to do your homework and do lots of research before ordering any allergy control product you are not familiar with.

Number of Items Needed

To get the closest you can to an allergen-free home, you may need a lot more than one of each kind of allergy control product. For example, experts suggest having a HEPA filter for each room of your house, even if you have a 1,200 square foot home and the filter says it can cover a 1,200 square foot area. This will simply not work with air flow patterns and it’s better to buy smaller filters and place them throughout the home.

With dust mite bedding, it makes no sense to just protect your own bedding when the dust mites can just proliferate in your guest bed or other family members’ beds. Be sure to buy enough slip covers for all the beds in your home. Buying more than one allergy control product each will naturally increase the costs but it’s better to allergy-proof your house effectively.

Trying to free a home of irritating allergens can be an uphill battle, but one you don’t have to wage alone. Remember to do your research and consider cost, effectiveness and quantity of items when selecting the allergy control products you need.

Cat Allergy Symptoms: Feline Making You Sneeze?

Tag: Generaladmin @ 12:55 pm

Cat Allergy Symptoms: Feline Making You Sneeze?

It should not be difficult to determine if you are allergic to cats or not. Many people are allergic to cats and know that they are. They have never seen an allergist. That is because, whenever a cat is around, they have a bad allergic reaction.

It doesn’t take a genius to deduce that it’s your feline that is causing your discomfort. What are cat allergy symptoms, however, and what do you do to alleviate them, without getting rid of the family pet?

Some Symptoms to Look out For

If, when you are in contact with a cat or cat fur, you begin sneezing uncontrollably or your eyes begin watering, these are the most common forms of cat allergy symptoms.

Some people can have such bad cat allergy symptoms, that they require immediate medical attention. Their throat may swell up and make it difficult to talk or to swallow. These symptoms may be so severe that cats must be avoided altogether.

If you have cat allergy symptoms and don’t want to give up your cat, there might be some supplements or medicine available that will help you. Therefore, your symptoms would become less severe and you could keep your cat.

To find a complete solution to your cat allergy, you may have to tell your cat good-bye. You may have to find him a home to go to where he will be treated well and loved by all. He will be alright. It is not your fault you have an allergy. It happens in life. Cat allergies are not rare, many suffer from this allergy.

Do remember, your cat allergy is not the fault of the cat. Your body and your system simply are exhibiting symptoms when you are near the cat. It does not signal that you should no longer love the cat.

If you are still sure you are willing to try to live with the allergic reactions you are experiencing around the cat, then that is your decision. If you can take medicine and be alright, then you may decide keeping the cat is the right thing. But, if you can’t tolerate the symptoms you are having from the cat, find a good home for your pet, and begin living an allergy free life.

Natural Allergy Remedies Work The Best

Tag: Generaladmin @ 12:55 pm

Natural Allergy Remedies Work The Best

Allergy relief for all allergies

Many allergies start from when we are children and there has been some link to pregnancy and a certain predisposition to them. For example a child can become allergic to nuts if they started eating them before the age when it is deemed appropriate. The body cannot cope with this type of food too early and they become allergic to it. If a digestive system is too weak or underdeveloped due to a premature birth perhaps then an allergy might develop towards milk.

It can be very irritating and socially unacceptable to have allergies. You keep sneezing and coughing and a lot of the time it can prevent you from getting on and enjoying your life as you would like to. There are many allergies that people have and some include hay fever, allergies to dust, milk, nuts and bees. Many of these people live in fear and if they are children, the parents live in fear.

There are many ways that you can get allergy relief with natural allergy remedies. Many people have not heard of these or are skeptical that they actually work and would rather stick to the doctor’s prescription just in case. This is totally unnecessary as you can start your child or yourself on any natural allergy remedy right away and see for yourself.

Certain herbs and mineral can help to reduce inflammation and relieve pain when you suffer from allergies. These are included in many of the natural allergy remedies you get and aside from buying the individual herbs and mineral compounds; you can also get various specially formulated allergy relief products to combat all the symptoms of allergies.

Asthma is another serious allergy and the main cause of all allergies including asthma is a release of histamines to the nerve receptors when they feel the attack of certain pollens, pet hairs and mould. This causes us to sneeze, become watery eyed, have difficulty breathing and gives you a runny nose and is why the doctor will prescribe an antihistamine. So, in order to combat this, using a natural allergy relief product, you need to first prevent the allergic attack and treat the allergies with natural antihistamines.

Some natural allergy remedies that you can use to take care of mild attacks from pollen, pet hair, mould, smoke, and dust includes sniffing salt water. The salt kills any bacteria and works the same way as a nasal spray. To do this you can get what are called neti pots, and are used in India quite frequently. Quercetin is a natural plant extract found in parsley, onions, citrus fruit and apples that is used to stop the mast cells in your body from releasing the histamines that cause your allergy symptoms. Use foods like chilies and peppers to act as a natural decongestant and eat lots of omega 3 fatty acids that reduce inflammation. Natural allergy remedies have been tested and many allergy suffers have been able to live more healthy lives because of them. It is well worth looking into if you have tried everything and are just stuck taking medication every single day, which has other side effects that are not good for the body.
